Who knew you could get an award for showing people the finger?

Our kiff Poison City Brewing bottle label designs won big at the inaugural Beer Label Design Awards in the Mother City.

The inaugural Beer Label Design Awards, organised by Winemag.co.za. and  proudly sponsored by self-adhesive label supplier Rotolabel, took place on the 14th of March 2018 at the Cavelli Wine Estate in Somerset West.

The competition saw Poison City Brewing compete with the biggest and best beer brands in the country, and was judged by an expert panel of industry experts who were looking to reward outstanding design as an influence on beer purchases.

You can make the best beer in the world (which we do) but no one’s going to pick it up off the shelf if we can’t grab their interest with a shit hot label. And that’s where our uncommonly creative branding agency, unagency, comes into the picture.

They’ve helped us give birth to this awesome brand, and build it into a kick-ass challenger brand in the craft beer market.

On the night of the 14th, unagency’s combination of originality, creativity and effectiveness was rewarded with not one, but four awards, which included:

  • Silver Award for The Other Bird in the Single Beer category
  • Silver Award for The Punk Rocker in the Single Beer category
  • Bronze Award for The Bird in the Single Beer category
  • Bronze Award for The Bird, The Punk Rocker and The Other Bird in the Beer in a Series category

Graeme Bird, who attended the event with fellow founder Andre Schubert, was pretty chuffed, “While we’re incredibly proud of our brand and our beer, this was a surprise. It’s an incredibly tough job launching and building a new challenger brand in a highly cluttered category like craft beer in SA. Especially as two Durbanites against the overwhelming tide of Cape Town brands. The only thing we could do was start with an honest reflection of ourselves, where we live and what we believe, then work our asses off to make it known and loved.”

The people at unagency were also deservedly pleased with themselves. “This unusual partnership began with a perfect combination of blank canvas and trust”, says Peter Schmitt, partner at unagency, “we’ve been able to take Graeme and Andre’s conviction, their raison d’être, and bring it to life through their brand story, their identity and their bottle label designs. Because we believe that the brands we really love are the ones whose beliefs ignite us, they make us feel like we belong, that we’re part of their story and they are a part of ours. And that’s how we live our poison.”

The Beer Label Design Awards allowed us to stand with the big boys and triumph, and isn’t it great to know that our bottles look as good as our beer tastes?
